The Mighty Deer-Lick
January 18, 2009
I put a deer-lick block on a stump at the fence of my neighbour’s backyard,
hoping that this might attract Peg-Leg and co. I also have some special
feed with corn and molasses.

Son of Peg-Leg and the smaller Son of Peg-Leg Jr. have been searching
for food during this cold snap we’ve been experiencing in the area.
I usually give them apples, as well as my neighbour. I’m going to
put out a salt-lick for them. Perhaps in the front yard as well, as
they are often in the front area of the house early in the morning.

Dropping the Antlers
January 7, 2009
Looks like the “son of Peg-Leg Jr.” has lost his antlers.
I’m wondering if I should wonder off into the ravine to
see if I can find them.
At first, I thought it might be one of the females, but
on closer examination, I discovered the deep-red coloured
patches where the antlers once were. I guess it takes some
time for the wounds to heal and close.
The older male is always close by. I haven’t seen Peg-Leg
for a couple of weeks.

Peg-Leg Prepares for the Winter Season
November 22, 2008
Looks like Peg-Leg is back to scrounging for bird seed in my neighbour’s back yard,
as the days are becoming much more frosty.
Taken in the early afternoon – Saturday, November the 22nd, 2008.
There is another male (Peg-Leg’s offspring, perhaps) who is getting
in the habit of grazing on our front lawn late in the evening or in the
early hours of the morning. I’ve been putting chunks of apples in the
birdbath, which I strategically placed just below the front window.
I can watch him feed on them directly from there. I’ve been thinking
of installing a real-time “deer-cam”.
