Downey Woodpecker

May 14, 2007

This is the Downey Woodpecker.
He’s been visiting our suet block in
the feeder for a few years now.

Downey woodpeckers live all over most of North America.
They are one of the only types of woodpeckers that will
visit a feeder on a regular basis. They are very similar to
the Hairy Woodpecker, who often dwells in the same
area, making it hard to distinguish between the two.

These woodpeckers stay all year round. We keep the suet in the
feeder at all times. He’s in the feed just as much in
the summer as in the winter.

The above picture was taken in April 2007.
